Sort your space with our Crafty Organiser. There’s nothing quite like a good declutter in the house to clear your head, but rather than throw all your favourite possessions away, why not see if you can simply organise them more efficiently? Corinne Bradd’s pocket storage is the ideal solution for this and can be used in a myriad of ways – here, we show you just how easy it is to store all of your crafty essentials.
Essentials
- Fabric: printed, co-ordinating; plain, white
- Lightweight fusible interfacing
Download and print the templates from sewmag.co.uk. Cut lightly patterned fabric, 30cm x 35cm, and fuse a same size rectangle of interfacing to the back. Use the different template pieces to cut pockets from co-ordinating fabrics and line with interfacing as before. Trim 2cm wide strips of a darker fabric.
Stitch one along the front curved edge of a pocket, right sides together with a 5mm seam allowance, easing the fabric strip around the curve and leaving 1cm excess at each end. Fold the strip over the top of the curve, tuck under 3mm of the raw edge and topstitch in place as you would bias binding. Trim the excess to 5mm. Repeat for the other pockets.
Pin the trimmed pockets in place on the background panel, allowing the top edges to flare out slightly. Secure with a 3mm wide zig zag stitch around the three flat sides of each pocket. Cut more 2cm wide strips of darker fabric. Pin right sides together along the bottom edges of the central pockets, sew down, fold over, tuck in 3mm of the raw edge and topstitch to cover the zig zag stitching.
Repeat with a vertical strip down the centre of the organiser, covering the excess binding and zig zag stitching. Take two 2cm x 12cm pieces of darker fabric. Fold in 5mm on both long edges, fold in half and topstitch 1mm from the folded edges to make narrow piping. Fold in half and tack to the top of the organiser, 1cm from each corner with the loops facing down.
Cut plain white cotton, 30cm x 35cm, and pin to the back to cover all the sewing. Edge the whole thing with 2cm wide strips of darker fabric binding as before, overlapping the binding at the corners and ensuring any raw ends are folded in neatly. Lift the loops and secure in an upright position with a few small hand stitches.
