Make a beige stocking
Download the free templates, then print them out. Cut two stocking shapes from beige cotton, then one heel piece and one toe piece from blue cotton. From printed blue fabric, cut three small flowers and a 7cm x 14cm band, which will be used for the top of the stocking. Give one of the 14cm sides a scalloped edge, as shown.
Fold the raw edges of the heel and toe pieces over to the wrong side by 3mm and press. Use an acid-free glue stick to coat the wrong side of the them and the top band pieces, and carefully adhere each of them into place on the right side of one beige fabric stocking piece, being sure to stick them down securely as this will prevent frayed edges. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Lay the stocking front on a piece of plain paper and using straight or decorative stitches, machine or hand sew the detail onto the stocking, working with a beige thread on the blue fabric areas and a blue thread on the beige fabric areas. The paper will provide a firm support, which could also be achieved by using anembroidery hoop. Tear the paper away and iron on the reverse to set the stitches.
Lay the two beige stocking pieces right sides together and stitch around the edge (leaving the top edge open), with a 5mm seam allowance. Snip into the curved seams around the toe, heel, underside and top of the foot, working almost up to the stitched seam line to allow the seam to ‘give’, which will produce a neat finish. Turn right side out and iron on the reverse.
Stitch a piece of gingham bias binding around the top of the stocking to enclose the raw top edges, catching a 10cm loop under it at the right-hand seam.
Create a blue stocking
Download and print the relevant templates. Use them to cut two stocking shapes from blue cotton, then one heel piece, one toe piece and a 7cm x 14cm band from beige cotton. From printed blue cotton, cut a decorative floral band, plus three decorative flower sections, as shown.
Fold the raw edges of the heel and toe pieces over to the wrong side by 3mm and press. Use an acid-free glue stick to coat the wrong side of the beige fabric heel, toe and top band pieces, and carefully adhere each of them into place on the right side of one blue fabric stocking piece, being sure to stick them down securely as this will prevent frayed edges. Repeat for the patterned motifs. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Lay the stocking on a piece of plain paper (right sides up) and stitch all of the decorative detail, using beige thread to embellish the blue fabric and blue thread on the beige fabric. Tear the paper away and iron on the reverse to set the stitches.
Lay the two blue stocking pieces right sides together and stitch around the edge, leaving the top of the stocking open and taking a 5mm seam allowance. Snip into the curved seams around the toe, heel, underside and top of the foot. Turn right side out and iron on the reverse. As for the beige stocking, add a length of bias binding to the top edge to enclose any raw edges and add a looped piece to hang the stocking from.
