Making paper chains is a fond childhood memory for many of us. Why not get the kids involved in the fun and make a fabric version by designer Chloe Hailwood instead? It’s only three steps and can be made using scraps you have lying around your sewing room.
1 Cut out six pieces of contrasting fabric, 27cm x 44cm. Press interfacing to the reverse of the fabrics. Mark and cut out six strips of fabric, 9cm x 22cm. Fold one piece in half lengthways, right sides facing. Using a 5mm seam allowance, stitch the 22cm edges together.
2 Move the seam to the centre, turn inside out and press. Fold the open ends inside the strip by 5mm and press in place. Repeat for all the pieces. Pick up a strip, bring one end to meet the other and make a hoop. Ensure the ends just touch each other, with no overlapping. Put in some tacking stitches to hold. Pick up another and loop through the first. Repeat the meeting up of edges and tacking. Continue until there’s a continuous length of chain.
3 Use a wide zig zag stitch to sew both sides of the strip together, letting the needle work from one edge over to another. Remove the tacking and neaten the zig zag stitch ends to finish.
