Why not make a change from your usual tablecloth with a patchwork runner? While setting the scene for the perfect dinner party, the padded panels also protect your table from hot dishes brimming with tasty treats. It’s also a great way to use up any leftover fabric scraps from previous projects; just swap and change the pattern until you find the perfect colour combination.

    1. Cut three 25cm squares of white cotton and tack onto squares of wadding, 5mm from the edge. Trim your fabric scraps into 5.5cm wide strips, then cut across each strip into rectangles of random length.

    2. Mix up the rectangles and stitch end to end in a random order to make a continuous length of patchwork. Press seams open.

    3. Cut six 25cm lengths from your patchwork strip and stitch into two sets of three by sewing side by side. Use these two panels to join the three white padded squares.

    4. Attach a border of two strips wide around the outside of the white padded squares, then press. 5Cut white cotton the same size as your runner and sandwich wadding between this and the patchwork panel. Pin all three layers together before quilting around the white squares.

    5. Cut several 4cm wide strips of patterned fabric and and join to make a continuous strip long enough to wrap around the perimeter or the runner. Place the strip right side down on one side of the runner and sew in place.

    6. Trim any excess down to the length of the runner, fold over the raw edge and turn under 5mm on the edge. Pin and oversew the strip to the back of the runner. Repeat for the other three sides.
