Do you know someone setting off to uni? This colouful set will make the perfect gift. Amanda Walker has used a variety of ribbons, buttons and fabrics to customise the bedding, which is perfect for any student bedroom.
Embellish a duvet cover
Turn the duvet inside out and unpick along the top edge and 15cm down either side. Open the undersides of the pieces out. Cut ribbons and bias binding to the appropriate lengths. Weave gingham ribbon through the broderie anglaise piece and then pin all of the strips into place on the lighter side of the duvet, using the image as a guide. Edge stitch each length to secure.
Stitch up the duvet on the reverse, overlocking the edges to keep them neat. Fix fusible webbing onto the wrong side of a range of fabrics with an iron. Using the templates provided on page 83, draw the chosen shapes onto the paper and cut out. Peel off the backing and position on the front of the duvet, using the image as a guide. Press with an iron.
Stitch buttons or beads to the centre of some flowers to decorate. Cut small butterfly embellishments from a length of trim, and fix these around the blooms. Chain stitch an antenna and pearl beads to the large appliqued butterfly. Continue to embellish as desired. When using, fold the top of the duvet over to reveal the ribbon trims.
