Stitch an ice cream cushion

1. Download the templates and print. Pin the whole ice cream shape to yellow striped fabric and cut out. Transfer the diagonal lines indicated on the template onto the material and topstitch in a darker thread. Cut the small ice cream shape from dark pink patterned fabric and the large ice cream template from pink spotted fabric.

2. Lay the large pink spotted ice cream shape over the striped whole ice cream piece, matching up the shaped sides, and pin into place. Machine stitch around the wavy edge, where the colour change occurs. Pin the small, dark pink shape at the top and machine stitch around the wavy edge as before.

3. Pin large pink ric rac across the colour change between the spotted and striped fabric, and machine stitch into place. Pin small ric rac across the colour change between the pink spotted and dark pink fabric and stitch. Sew buttons as shown, spacing them evenly. Add felt flowers across the small ric rac.

4. Cut a 30cm x 40cm piece of pink spotted fabric. Press down and machine stitch a double hem at the longest edge. Cut another piece of pink spotted cotton measuring 40cm x 46cm. Press down and machine stitch a double hem at the shortest edge. Sew a length of large ric rac across the shortest edge.

5. Position the larger section on top of the smaller one, overlapping it by 5cm, and pin the sides together. Pin the whole ice cream template to the fabric, matching up the break line as indicated on the pattern, and cut out. With right sides facing, pin the back and front together and machine stitch. Turn out and press. Sew a felt ball to the top.

6. Pin the whole ice cream template to cream lining fabric and cut out two pieces. Pin them together and machine stitch around the shape leaving a 10cm gap for stuffing. Fill the cushion pad lightly and sew up the gap. Insert into the ice cream cover to finish.

Make an ice lolly cushion

1. Prepare a foam pad by trimming off the corners to create a curve shape for the ice lolly. For the front, cut 23cm x 30cm from dark patterned fabric. From spotted cotton, cut 12cm x 30cm and from plain brown material, cut 12.5cm x 30cm. With right sides facing, pin the dark patterned fabric to the spotted cotton and machine stitch together. With right sides facing, pin and sew the brown material to the spotted fabric.

2. Cut wide light pink ric rac to size, pin across the brown/spotted colour change and machine stitch into place. Repeat with dark pink ric rac across the other fabric join. Trim the corners off the brown fabric to match the foam pad and sew on various buttons.

3. For the lolly back, cut 23cm x 30cm from dark patterned fabric. From spotted cotton, cut 13.5cm x 30cm and 13.5cm x 30cm from plain brown material. Pin the spotted fabric to the dark patterned piece and machine stitch together. Pin dark pink ric rac across the colour change and sew into place. At the raw edge of the spotted fabric, press and machine stitch a double hem. Pin and sew light pink ric rac across the top of the hemmed edge.

4. On the longest edge of the brown fabric, press and machine stitch a double hem. Trim the corners to match the front. Sew buttons on, spacing them evenly. Place the brown fabric under the spotted one and tack, matching up the sides and colour changes with the front. Press all seams open.
