Introducing the ultimate cuddle companion and an adorable addition to your sofa set-up. This characterful cushion from Carolyn Letten can be made in your choice of fabric, so adjust the backing colour to suit your interior and play around with the features to match the furry friend in your life. You also have the option of removing the whiskers and changing the ear shape to transform your purrfect project into a woof-tastic tribute.
Download and print the templates from sewmag.co.uk. Cut out a 43cm circle from yellow spot fabric. Use the templates provided to snip out two eyes from navy and a nose from deep pink. From pale pink fabric, trim two 9cm circles. Back all of the pieces with interfacing.
Using the photo as a guide, pin the eyes, nose and cheeks in place, then sew around the eyes and nose with navy thread, just inside the raw edge. Use deep pink thread to stitch around the cheeks. Iron on the reverse. Using the water erasable pen, draw the whiskers directly onto the fabric, then sew over each whisker twice in navy thread. Iron on the reverse, then set aside. Cover the piping cord with yellow bias binding and stitch in yellow thread down the entire length. Cut it in half.
Lay the front of the cushion right side up and pin the piping cord in place around the circumference so that the raw edge of the binding is 5mm in from the fabric raw edge. The piped edge will be facing inwards. Before sewing it down, curve the end of the piped cord so it sits just outside the edge of the circle; this will make sure it doesn’t show when the cushion is turned right side out. Finish in the same way, so the raw end is outside the circle.
Use the template provided to cut two inner ears from pale pink fabric, then turn the template over for the second. Cut a front and back for each ear from pale yellow, then turn the template over. Take each pale yellow ear front and stitch a pink inner ear in place and iron on the reverse. Pin each ear front right sides together with a back, and add wadding cut the same size underneath. Leaving the straight edge at the bottom unstitched, sew a 1cm seam around the curved edges. Snip into the seam on the curve, then turn right side out. Machine quilt around the edge of the pale pink fabric. Pin the ears in place, right sides together with the cushion front and sew across above the piping.
