    Make a yellow fascinator

    1. Start with an 11cm yellow sinamay base. Cut a 35cm length of flower motif lace trim and sew it around the edge with yellow thread so the lace sits on the sinamay binding (Fig.1). Do not pull too tight as the flowers will not lie flat; keep any knots of cotton on the underside of the sinamay. Use yellow paint to spray over the base, and the trim, until it’s all one colour. Leave to dry.

    2. Cut 22cm x 50cm of yellow veiling. Gather the long edge by sewing running stitch along the entire length (Fig.2). Pull tight and wrap thread around the gathered end. Attach to the sinamay base 5cm in from the edge. Curve the net at the corners by trimming. Sew the veiling to the centre of the sinamay base.

    3. Take a yellow rose, curl the stem up into a coil, hiding it underneath. Place it onto the sinamay. Sew the lower petals to the base, working the next layer in the same way by adding one tiny stitch on each petal.

    4. Curl the stems of two small yellow roses, as before, and sew in the same way as the large rose. (Fig.3). To make a bow from the veiling, fold a 50cm piece in half and slightly overlap the edges. Sew the width using running stitch and pull together (Fig.4).Wrap thread around middle section and hand sew in between the large rose and the smaller rose at the back.

    5. Cut a 5.5cm felt disc. Place the fascinator upside down, measure 9.5cm on the tiara band, and with a hot glue gun, sandwich the band in between the sinamay base and the felt.

    Stitch a purple fascinator

    1. Sew a length of flower motif lace to a purple fascinator base with coordinating thread, as before. Cut 23cm of the scalloped edge trim and sew a line of running stitch along the straight side. Pull gently on the stitches and gather the trim together to create a flower form.

    2. Wrap the thread around the base and stay stitch. Using purple paint, spray the trim until the colours are matched. Leave to dry. Sew a large purple rose onto the base and nestle the scalloped lace flower next to it, on the edge of the sinamay.
