About this pattern

Keep cosy this winter with our space-tastic rocket Hottie Bottle. When a little extra warmth and comfort is needed on cold winter nights, nothing beats snuggling up with a hot water bottle. Little ones will be over the moon with this rocket-shaped cover from Carolyn Letten – made from soft plush fabric with cool metallic accents, it’s simply out of this world! Plus, when the weather starts to warm up, simply remove the hot water bottle to use the spaceship as a pyjama case.

Essentials

  • Fabric: plush, blue, yellow, pink; leatherette, silver; glitter, navy; cotton, lining
  • Bias binding, navy white spot
  • Wadding

    1. Download and print the templates from sewmag.co.uk. Cut the four main pieces for the rocket front using the templates provided: A and C from blue plush fabric, B from pink plush and D from yellow plush. With right sides pinned together, sew A to B along the straight edge, B to C across the long straight edges then C to D across the remaining straight edges.

    2. Lay this piece right side up on a piece of wadding cut slightly larger, then lay the wadding onto lining fabric which is also cut slightly larger, wrong side up. Pin them all together, then sew a 5mm seam all the way around the edge of the plush fabric top. Trim off all excess fabric up to the edge of the plush top.

    3. Cut a 9cm diameter circle from silver leatherette fabric and a 7cm diameter circle from navy glitter fabric. Use white thread to sew the glitter circle in the middle of the silver circle. Repeat with a 5cm diameter circle from glitter fabric and a 7cm diameter circle from silver fabric. Use grey thread to sew them in place just in from the raw edge of the silver onto the plush front using the picture as a guide for placement. Use the same thread to stitch around the edge of the glitter fabric edge.

    4. For the back, cut pink plush fabric measuring the width of the bottle by 22cm long. Make sure to shape the bottom by using the finished front as a guide. Cut yellow plush fabric to the shape of the rocket top and 24cm long, again using the finished front as a guide. Repeat step two, then once trimmed, add binding to the top straight edge of the pink and the bottom straight edge of the yellow.

    5. Use template F to cut a pair of side fins from silver leatherette fabric, remembering to turn the template over for the second side. Lay each one right sides together with a piece of leatherette cut slightly larger. Leaving the straight side edge unstitched, sew a 5mm seam all the way around the curved edge, then trim close to the stitch line with pinking shears. Turn right side out and topstitch around the curve.
