Welcome to part one of our fun sew-along! In this first stage, you'll create a charming umbrella quilt block using a simple downloadable template and just four easy steps — perfect for beginners. The quilt block features cute umbrella shapes and colourful fabrics, making it a delightful project to brighten up any rainy day. In part two, we’ll transform your quilt block into a practical drawstring bag, ideal for storing kids’ wellies and rain macs. Let’s get started!
Download and print the template, trace and cut out four three-part umbrella shapes from interfacing, trim four handles from coloured felt, choose three similar shades of cotton print fabric and iron an umbrella section to the reverse of each.
Cut around the interfacing to leave a 7mm border, fold the excess fabric over the edges of the interfacing and tack down, clipping curves and mitring corners where necessary, place the tacked pieces right sides together and oversew to join them, press the shape flat but do not remove the tacking.
Cut a 16cm square of contrasting colour print fabric and fold in half diagonally one way and then the other, finger-pressing the folds, lay a felt umbrella handle along one line starting from the middle of the block, and oversew in place with two strands of matching embroidery thread.
Pin and oversew the top of the umbrella to cover the top end of the handle, using the pressed lines to position it centrally, make three more blocks in the same way, creating two of each colourway.
