Master French Seams

Get to grips with a clever seam favourite for a continental finish! French seams are common in clothes for children, where the skin is extra sensitive, as the inside is completely smooth.

Master French Seams

1.

With wrong sides together and using a 1.7cm allowance, pin and straight-stitch 1cm from the raw edge. Trim the raw edge to 5mm and press open, then fold back on itself and press again.

2.

Straight-stitch 7mm from the edge, enclosing the raw edge inside the seam, then press open; this will reveal the final row of stitching taken from the inside of the garment enclosing the raw edge.

3.

Press the seam on the wrong side with the right sides folded together to flatten the enclosed edges. Turn to the right side and it should look like a normal seam.
