The Great British Sewing Bee - Week Four

If we could choose one philosophy at Sew HQ, it would be ‘make do and mend’. And there is no other challenge which demonstrates this better than Reduce, Reuse & Recycle week. It’s all about taking old, tattered garments from the back of your wardrobe and revamping them into something fresh and new.

We simply can’t forget the cheeky exchanges that took place this episode, from Patrick telling Brogan “I think this wins the award for being the most nana-looking duvet set” to Esme announcing her preference for Egyptian cotton. To which Sara remarked “Of course you do, fancy lady”. Esme certainly knows what she wants and won’t settle for anything less!

In this instalment, we saw the sewers tackle a quilted jacket. Esme and Patrick challenged them to make their own fabric, made up of 96 fabric scraps. As it was another first for the Sewing Bee, the sewers were well and truly wading through uncharted territory. The 12 contestants were tasked with creating a cohesive look, with perfectly lined up squares. Mitred corners and neat bindings were essential for this one.

We couldn’t help but be reminded of our Upcycled Quilt. Brought to you by Corinne Bradd, it’s made from a motley of vintage fabrics. Not only is it a great patchwork project for beginners, but you can refashion it from old linens and embroidery. What’s more, there’s scope for using old crochet pieces to rustle up a coordinating pillow.

The Transformation challenge called for the contestants to deconstruct two overcoats and combine them, using features from both to make a stylish, wearable coat. It was vital to use elements from both coats, including buttons and collars. Personally, we loved a certain pink and black puff-sleeved jacket with a peplum. If you haven’t caught up on the action yet, we won’t spoil it for you!

A perfect example is the Shauna Coatigan, a cross between a coat and a cardigan — it’s well and truly a fusion of two iconic styles. Made from textured boucle fabric, the Shauna Coatigan features a shawl collar and pockets. For a polished look, it’s important to use overlocking and zig zag stitches. Plus, any leftover fabric would make for a beautiful waist tie.

Finally, the Made to Measure task was all about maxi dresses. Patrick and Esme wanted the Bees to make this iconic garment out of old duvets. The pieces had to be imaginative with a well-fitted bodice, and the results hung on the contestants’ choice of duvet — were the patterns well balanced? Did the colours tie together? While some of the contestants had chosen charity shop buys, others were using their very own throws. We all have old duvets sitting in our airing cupboards at home, so why not give them a new lease of life!

Torie Jayne’s classic Maxi Dress is a strong contender. This strappy gown is a no-pattern make ideal for beginners. Not only is it easily adjustable, but it’s delicate draping flatters every shape. The key here is shirring — it’s essential for a perfectly fitted finish. If you ask us, its geometric print is reminiscent of this episode’s Garment of the Week!
