Tie-Dye Scrunchie
Baby garments Children Girl’s clothing
Spritz your way to a Tie Dye Scrunchie. Getting the kids up and ready for school can be a challenge, but when they’ve got their hair up in a ponytail finished with one of Jill Albas’ hand-dyed beauties, they’ll be itching to hop on the bus and show it off to their classmates! Quick and easy to make, this project is also a great one for the children to get involved; instead of dipping the silk into dyes, each accessory is simply sprayed with fabric paints.
Essentials
- Fabric, white silk
- Spray paint: raspberry pink, golden yellow, sky blue, deep purple
- Elastic bands
- Elastic, 5mm wide
Dimensions List
Before starting, cover your work surface and protect your clothes. Also, test the fabric paints on scrap paper to ensure an even spray. Trim 10cm x 56cm of silk. Gather a little of the silk into a point and wrap the gathered fabric tightly with an elastic band. Repeat this step six to eight times along the length of the silk.
Place a double thickness of kitchen towel or tissues on your covered work surface and place the silk on top with the elastic bands and gathered fabric facing up. Hold the paint 20cm from the fabric and spray gently. Continue in this way until you have the shade and coverage you want, then remove the elastic bands.
When the silk is dry, press flat with an iron at the right setting for the fabric. Once ironed, the paint will be fixed and can be washed at 40°C. Turn one of the short ends over at 1.5cm and press. Fold the silk in half lengthwise and press again. Sew along the long raw edge leaving a seam of about 5mm.
Turn the fabric inside out so the sewn seam is on the inside. Trim 23cm of 5mm wide elastic 23cm and attach a safety pin to one end. Thread the elastic through the silk, knot the ends very firmly and remove the safety pin. Tuck the raw edge of the silk inside the folded end, then press and sew.
