In this simple jumper rework, we show you how to customise a plain sweater with a beautiful printed chiffon by simply making a template with pattern paper and neatly hand sewing the fabric in place with ladder stitches. It couldn't be easier and is the perfect beginner project to complete in front of the TV or in the garden if it's sunny.
Rework a jumper
Turn one sleeve of a jumper inside out, then thread it through to the other unturned sleeve. Match and pin the two side seams together and fold along the centre front of the jumper. Position and pin this to the straight edge of a piece of plain pattern paper, then draw around the neckline.
Use a pin to stab along the armhole seam into the paper, to mark the shape of the armhole. The side seam will run from the underarm at an angle to the hem. Mark the side seam and expand the width of the hem. Remove the jumper from the paper, then add a 1cm seam allowance to the neckline, armhole, side seam and hem. Cut out the pattern piece.
Position and pin the pattern piece onto folded chiffon fabric, matching the straight edge of the pattern to the fold in the material and cut out. Remove the pattern piece and, while the fabric is still folded, clip around the neckline and armhole making sure not to snip past the 1cm seam allowance. Make a small machine or hand stitched rolled hem at the base of the piece.
