About this pattern

We think these fabric wine bags could be used to great effect in your home; you can tie them into your kitchen's overall scheme for a totally cohesive look. They're also a great way to present a bottle of wine to a friend this Christmas – who needs shop-bought paper wine bags when you can make something as lovely as this in a flash?

Essentials

  • Fabric, cotton: printed, white
  • Bakers twine
  • Darning needle

1 Cut two pieces of fabric: one outer and one lining, both 31cm x 40cm. Lay right sides together. Sew along one short edge and open out. Fold the fabric pieces in half, right sides together, in the opposite direction and sew down the long seam to make a tube. Flatten the tube so the seam lays down the centre and stitch across the short seam on the outer fabric end.

2 Turn the tube right side out, fold in 5mm along the short end of the lining and topstitch. Push the lining inside the outer and topstitch around the top, 3mm from the edge. With the bag inside out, place a bottle inside, allowing the base of the bag to flatten and form two points on either side of the bottle.Pin and stitch a straight line across the points, 3cm from the tip, to square up the base of the bag.

3 Turn right side out and allow the points to sit flat inside the base. Use a darning needle and coloured bakers twine to sew running stitch around the top of the bag, 6cm from the edge, to gather the fabric around the neck of the bottle.
