Alex Shacket

fb-big twitter-big email-big pin-big

A delightful hybrid of both shirt and jacket, the humble shacket has swiftly become everyone’s favourite ‘throw-on and go’ outwear option. It’s packed with styling potential for both men and women, which is one of the reasons Posner and Posner decided to make this a unisex pattern. Simply switch up your plaid palette when making each design – unless you fancy going matchy-matchy, of course!

  5. Sleeve: cut two
  6. Top pocket: cut two
  7. Side pocket: cut four
  8. Cuff: cut two from fabric and one from fusible interfacing – cut in half to interface each cuff up to the fold line
  9. 1.5cm seam allowance used throughout, unless otherwise stated.
    1. Download and print the template from sewmag.co.uk and follow the cutting guide. To make the top pockets, turn a narrow hem at the top of the pocket piece and stitch. Fold the pocket top along the fold line and press. Press the pocket back, right sides together along the fold line, and sew the pocket top along each side. Fold the pocket top back into position and press again.

    2. Press the seam allowance on to the inside of the pocket, along each side and across the bottom. With the right side of the pocket facing, topstitch along the top of the pocket to secure the flap in place. Repeat to make a second. Make a buttonhole in the centre of each pocket top. Pin the pockets in position on the front, where marked, and secure in place.

    3. Cut two strips of fusible interfacing to the length of the centre-front band, 3cm wide. Apply each strip to the wrong side of each of the centre-front bands. Press the centre-front bands along the first fold line, and again along the second fold line. Turn the top of the front band back on itself, right sides together, and sew across the top. Trim the seam, turn the band back to the right side and press. Clip the seam allowance of the neckline at the side of the front band.

    4. With right sides together, pin one of the yoke pieces to the back, matching centre-backs and notches. On the wrong side of the back, pin the second yoke piece with the right side of the yoke facing the wrong side of the back. Stitch through all layers. Press the yoke pieces up towards the neckline. Topstitch close to the seam line on the right side of the yoke.

    5. Pin the shoulder of the yoke to the shoulder of the front, right sides together and matching notches, then sew together. Turn the yoke lining through and pin in position so that after stitching, the right side of the yoke lining is facing outwards. Sew in place following the first stitching line. Press the yoke seam towards the back and topstitch close to the seam line.

    6. Apply interfacing to the wrong side of one of the collar pieces. Pin the collar pieces together, then sew along the straight edge and each side. Trim the seam allowance, turn the collar to the right side and press the edges. Position the collar around the neckline, matching centre-backs of the collar and yoke. Pin just one of the collar pieces, the underneath one, in place; where you clipped the seam allowance of the neckline at the side of the front band should be level with the stitching line at the edge of the collar.

    7. Sew the under collar in place around the neckline, starting and finishing at the collar edge seam. Clip the seam allowance of the under collar and trim the seam. Fold the seam allowance of the top collar to meet the stitching line, and slip-stitch or machine sew in place. Press the collar seam.

    8. With right sides together, pin the sleeves in place, matching the notches. Position the top of the sleeve at the shoulder line marked on the yoke. Stitch the sleeves in place. Neaten the seam allowance using an overlocker or by trimming the seam and using a zig zag stitch. Press the seam towards the sleeve. Neaten the curved edges of each of the four side pocket pieces using an overlocker or zig zag stitch. With right sides together, pin the straight edge of the pocket in position on each side of the front and back, then sew. Press the pockets away from the side seam.

    9. Pin the front to the back, from the sleeve edge to the hem, matching notches, underarm seams and around the pockets. Stitch the underarm and side seams, starting from the sleeve edge, down the side seam around each pocket, and down to the hem. When sewing around the pockets, pivot at the point where the pocket meets the side seam. Snip the seam allowance above and below the pockets. Neaten the edge of the seam allowance, press the seams open and the pockets towards the front.

    10. Apply fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the cuffs up to the fold line. Pin the short edge of the cuffs, right sides
