Trina Turtleneck

fb-big twitter-big email-big pin-big

Since the heydays of the sixties, there has always been a space in the wardrobe for this comfortable classic, which you can bring up to date in organic bamboo jersey and in just a few steps. Its fit is due to the four-way stretch fabric, and the garment is easily constructed with a four-thread overlocker, with a twin needle for the hems.

Essentials
  1. Jersey, four-way stretch,
  2. 1.7m (150cm)
Sizes
  1. 8-24
Cutting Guide
  1. Front: cut one on the fold
  2. Back: cut one on the fold
  3. Sleeves: cut one pair
  4. Collar: cut one
  5. 1cm seam allowance used throughout, unless otherwise stated.

1 Download the template, then print out and follow the cutting guide. Position the front and back pieces, right sides together, then match, pin and stitch the shoulder seams together.

2 Fold the collar in half, right sides together, matching the centre-back edges, then pin and stitch together. Turn to the right side and fold the collar in half again, aligning the raw edges. The seam in the collar becomes the centre back, and you will need to mark the centre front of the collar.

3 Mark the centre-back and front of the neckline on the top. With the wrong side facing of the top and matching the centre fronts and back together, tuck the collar down into the neck. The collar will need slightly stretching to fit the neck of the top. Pin, making sure all the raw edges are level, then sew around.

4 While the side seams of the top are still open, insert the sleeves into the armholes. Match the notches, with the notch in the head of the sleeve on the end of the shoulder seam. Stitch, stretching the head of the sleeve to accommodate the easing.

5 Match the underarm edges of the sleeve to the back and front side seams, then stitch a continuous seam from the cuff of the sleeves to the bottom edge of the turtleneck. Neaten the edges of the body and sleeves by pressing up a 1.5cm hem. Using a twin needle, sew the hems in place, being careful not to stretch the fabric as you stitch.
